I really dislike the commercial nature of the holiday season and wondered what happened to getting a chocolate and a Timex watch for Christmas? We didn’t buy things when I was a child and as I looked at the wish list from my kids this year I had to shake my head with some sadness. What happened to the old fashioned Christmas of our parents, where it was all about family and where presents had meaning to them? I guess my memories or I like to think so were of a much purer Christmas and it was definitely way less commercial. I guess this time of year we need to feel like it was better once and I really need those warm memories.
A memory from a dear friend this morning in answer to my question of what happened to getting a chocolate and a Timex watch..was answered with “During the war I spent one Christmas with my grand-parents and had a bright new penny, a small book AND AN ORANGE. Wow -and I never did find out just how they got hold of the orange, things being as they were then, but I loved them for it”..
Memories and family still are the woven sentiment in each and every season for everyone.
